Broken Basement

I'm sure many of you have heard by now that our basement completely flooded on Wednesday morning. Saskatoon had been pouring for a couple days and the sewers couldn't handle it so the rain water chose a few houses to invade (there are several houses on my street, and hundreds in the city that this happened to). Kayden was over last night and he is very upset that the basement is "broken." He is especially concerned about his broken toy room and told mom that we'll have to buy him some new toys.

I feel super wicked awesome that the sewer chose our newly-finished basement to occupy. Luckily our house was only attacked with dirty grey water, we didn't have little poopies floating around, that would've been the most disgusting thing I had ever seen! When I got home from work at lunch time I looked down the stairs (the water covered just past the bottom stair, about 9 inches) and I could see my shoes floating in the living room. My poor shoes! It got so much worse when I went into my room and saw this absolutely huge mess. I was like this is never going to get cleaned up, it's impossible. I had to say goodbye to Kelly Clarkson, but luckily Jack Johnson, Jann Arden and Sheryl Crow found safety on higher ground (my top shelf). But goodbye computer and all my furniture, CDs and lots of textbooks. Last night Lynnel and I went through all the clothes that were on the floor and I'm pretty sure I'll get quite the shopping spree out of it all. Dad told me I shouldn't say how much on the internet but I have to say it is an exciting dollar amount. If insurance comes through for me that is.

Also exciting is that I officially own my first pair of rubber boots! Haha, seriously the city is slowly being taken from me... the longer I date farmers, the farther I become! Just kidding I think. (I still love my country music). Anyway.

All joking aside, it is actually quite saddening for me because I have lost some things that I can never get back. People laugh at me but I'm actually really upset that I lost all my High School/Bible College/University work - I kept all my notes, especially from university and I had every single essay and project filed away. On the floor. Gone gone gone. Also I had some of my favorite photo albums on the bottom shelf that are ruined, a high school yearbook and actually even my baby book. I also had a huge box of journals on the floor in my closet, songs I had written, diaries and other things that I would never show another human being - all in the garbage. I feel very sad about all of those things.

We had lots of people come and help us on Wednesday night. We took everything out to the garage and ripped all the carpet out. It's definitely broken down there :) So thanks to all of you who helped us.

Anyway things like this tend to work themselves out in time. In the meantime, Rubbermaid has become the answer to all life's problems - if you have anything important to you in your basement, I suggest you put it in Rubbermaid.
